go 'stros!

18:49

Kelly left today. :( We had a really fun weekend. But I will write about that tomorrow. Today, I have other things to say.

It took long enough, but I'm finally getting caught up in the whole Astros post-season. I will freely admit that my (now) hometown team was nothing short of mind-boggling amazing in that they came from being counted out in the wild card race to not only winning the spot, but kicking some serious Atlanta patootie, meaning that "for the first time in their 43-year history, the Astros win a post-season series" (announcer). Yay Astros! Sorry Sarah, but anyone who pounds the Braves is a winner in my scorebook. I root for anyone against the Braves, unless it's the Dodgers or the Rockies. In which case, it's really a toss-up. If only they could all lose.

However, we cannot forget the contribution of the Giants. A team that nearly had the wild card clinched, the favorite, the shoo-in, the sure-thing. The Astros pulled a miracle out of thin air in getting as far as they did, but it was the Giants, my beloved Giants, who decided to help the little guy out by freakin' handing their last game to the freakin' Dodgers on a freakin' silver plate (have I mentioned recently how much I detest the Dodgers???) by losing a freakin' had game in the bottom of the freakin' ninth inning. Oh, and not by barely losing. By a ,i>grand slam. 3-0, bottom of the ninth. They give up two runs. Okay, 3-2, still a check in the win column, if they can hold out. Another run. Um, okay, we'll take 'em in extra innings. Then, Steve Finley steps up to the plate. Bases loaded, one out. CRACK! It's going, going, gone! It's a grand slam! 7-3! Dodgers win the NL West!!! To be fair, Giants did pull out to take the series 2-1, and still had a shot at the wild card, assuming the Rockies won a game in their series against the Astros, but it was not to be. The Astros had taken the bit and run with it, sweeping both the Rockies and the Giants' hopes like yesterday's trash.

Grrr.

It's not like it should really be a surprise. After all, this is the same team that gave gave game 6 of the 2002 World Series to the Angels. Tying a record - of blowing the largest lead (5 runs) in a World Series game. (Really not such a good thing to have a record in. Like being the losingest team ever.) Then, the Angels took game 7, but it didn't matter; when the Giants lost game 6, we all knew it was over.

As you can see, it's not like I'm bitter or anything. And really, I should know better. The Giants do this a lot. They are notorious for it. In fact, they lost their first series, their first game, to the Washington Senators in 1924, back when they were the NY Giants. And in 1951, too, just before moving to San Fran. Bobby Thomson hit a game-winning two-out three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to steal the pennant from the Brooklyn Dodgers. Then went on to have their booty kicked in the Series by the Yanks. In 1989, they were again in the Fall Classic, but didn't have a chance against the A's. Being a Giants fan leads to a lot of heartache. Good thing I'm not as fanatic as Sarah, or I probably would be depressed all the time.

Still, how is it that a team which has Barry Bonds, only the third man ever in the history of baseball to break 700 home runs, can't seem to follow through??

Anyway, back to the Astros. Seriously. How awesome are they? Not just beating, but absolutely demolishing Atlanta, 12-3, to take the series. Now, the next foe is St. Louis. If you're an Astros fan, or hate the Cardinals, or want something to distract you, then go to the Cardinals website and, in the bottom left-hand corner, vote for the Astros to win in 4-5. The radio show that I listen to in the mornings, Sam Malone on KRB 104.1, has been telling everyone to do this. It's now at 52%, whereas the next closest is 27% for Cards to win in 6-7. They did this to the Braves yesterday, so now they're doing it to the Cards. Ha ha! (Also, go to the Astros site and do the same.)

So, yeah, go 'Stros!. Oh, and have a nice day, everyone. :)
