the first civilian in space?

I made a mistake and am surprised that 1) noone caught it and if they did that 2) noone called me on it. I wrote that Mike Melvill is the first civillian in space. This is not true. There's Dennis Tito and Mark Shuttleworth, as well as the loads of civillians which Russia flew to Mir, and even NASA has flown the occasional Payload Specialist, not to mention teacher Christa McAuliffe on the ill-fated Challenger. All of which I am perfectly aware.

I may not have stated it specifically, but what I meant, and what I am sure all of the media meant, as well, is that this is the first civillian in space not supported by a government program. That is the key factor. I think that most people finished the sentence in their heads as I did, and that is why I was not called on it.
